An update from findmypast

Dear findmypast member,

You’ve probably noticed that findmypast has changed recently. We upgraded our site to deliver a better and quicker family history research experience. Migrating a site with billions of records is an ambitious task, and unfortunately during this process we met some challenges and some mistakes were made. This resulted in a less than perfect experience, especially for our expert users. I sincerely apologise if we let you down.

We are proud of and committed to our new website. It presents a new, unrestricted way to research family history, putting millions of records from across the globe at your fingertips. We are adding millions of new records and thousands of newspaper pages daily. I promise we’re committed to continuously improve our site and its features to enhance your family history research. We hope you will take the time to discover some of the many benefits of the new technology, while we restore some of the old features you’ve told us you miss.

Family history is, for many users, more than a hobby, it’s a passion. I am hugely grateful to everyone who has taken the time to use the new site and sent us feedback. Every one of your suggestions has been reviewed by our team, and our project plan is prioritised according to the issues you’ve raised.

With such a diverse group of customers, communication is a challenge. We could have communicated more clearly before, during and after the move. I can’t talk to every member individually (although I’d like to), but from today, I’ll be communicating with you on this blog every week with our current priorities and latest updates. You can also follow our progress on our What’s New page.

We appreciate healthy debate and we want to give members the opportunity to suggest future changes. We’ve revised our Facebook house rules, and we are moderating our Feedback Forum, to make sure everybody has a voice, and that every single suggestion continues to be reported back to our teams. Please post your ideas or vote on those from other people on our Feedback Forum.

I know that as well as being hugely passionate about family history, you, our members are the experts. We really do value your judgment, and we care about your opinion. I am pleased to announce the creation of our ‘customer participation group’ to help us better understand your needs and your ideas for future development. If you would like to be part of this group, to attend future online and offline events, and help us shape the future of findmypast, please sign up by emailing participate@findmypast.co.uk. I believe that together, we can continue to improve findmypast and make it the resource you need for your family history journey.

You can also get in touch with me directly at annelies@findmypast.co.uk. I may not be able to respond to every email, but please be assured that I will read every one.

Thanks again for your patience, your passion and your expert insights.

Annelies van den Belt, CEO findmypast
