We’re very happy to announce that you can now search fully indexed birth records for 1837 to 2006 on findmypast.co.uk
Fully indexing the birth records involved rescanning 170 years of records and transcribing the quarter of a billion names within them. Over 1,000 people have worked on this two-year project.
These records are now the easiest to search complete birth records available anywhere online. The following are some of the benefits of the fully indexed birth records:
If you haven’t had success finding an ancestor’s birth record previously, it’s definitely worth trying again using our fully indexed birth records - start searching them now.
Next on the list is a project to fully index the marriage and death records which we expect to complete by the end of the year.

When I tried a couple of searches yesterday, There was an option to search by Registration District. Logged on this morning and only County is available. Why?
Not connected, but when is the next tranche of Chelsea Pensioners coming out? Your schedule says BY July 2010, and we are halfway through the month. Is FMP over-promising or under-delivering?
Overall a good job, but sadly there are some glaring and avoidable errors. Many births registered at Wellington, Shropshire, for example, are shown as being registered at Wellington, Somerset despite the fact that this error could have been avoided by reference to the registration district number. You have the facility to submit corrections to your census records - might be an idea to add a similar facility to this set of records too. If you are also transcribing the marriage and death registration indexes, I hope steps can be taken to avoid repeating this error.
I’ve tried using the Advanced Tab to filter by County and by District and it does not work. I get all the districts displayed for the County.
Maybe someone could fix it
Thanks
Susan
Susan, I discovered that the County and District work independently.
If you only want results from particular districts don’t select a county - simply select the required districts.
However you can search for counties and districts simultaneously, in which case you’ll get both sets of results. (Of course, there’s no point doing this unless the districts are in a different county from the county you’ve selected.)
Hope this makes sense,
Peter
the birth records transcription should be checked every time as per instruction shown. Zeros in front of reference numbers are not being shown, (alpha numeric error in database field), to get accurate references for ordering certificates and for records, you must look at every original image, this takes extra time but do not rely on the transcriptions. I also have noticed several errors already in the new transcriptions, despite FMP’s trumpet blowing about how wonderful the new index is. However, it is a great facility and one I’ve been wanting ever since subscribing to 1837online in the beginning. I could not see a transcription error report place, will look again.
Is it just me or are you really listing births with neither father or mothers names noted. I feel this is no better than your previous records, as there is no way of confirming if you have the person you are looking for.
Pardon the pun, but you should take a leaf out of the Scottish records system. I have no problem at all researching my Scottish ancestry.
I find that I’ve waited all this time, with great anticipation to be down right disappointed in your efforts and, your charging us more for the privilege ….. not impressed ……… no way …. no how.
You can fool some the the people some of the time ……… but not all of the the people all of the time.
thank you Rosemary ive been searching for my granofathers parents and was
about to use this new birth index when I read your blog .I have my grandfathers
birthdate and birthplace but cant go back any farther .So if they are not giving
the fathers or mothers name it is no better than the old system
I thought this would be a great idea and as far as it goes it is, but having done a few searches it seems to me that these records are incomplete. I searched for records I knew existed and they did not always appear. I was looking for all the births of children born to my great grandfather, who was married twice, and it could not find any children at all! Strange that because I am here, and I wouldn’t be it he had had no children. I know of at least 6 children born to him and I wanted to see if there were any I had missed.
I also agree with the comment above. it is much easier to find people in Scotland, where you can see the actual entry. The index is useful but it must be a nightmare for people with more common names.
Do these records include Ireland, North or South?
