To mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain this year, the Battle of Britain Historical Society has organised a commemorative flight over the Battle of Britain area on 28 August 2010 and you could be a part of it.

Findmypast.co.uk is sponsoring the flight, along with the John Lewis Partnership. British Airways have provided an Airbus A320 which will fly the Battle of Britain veterans over the areas in which they fought in their Hurricanes, Spitfires, Blenheims and Defiants in the summer of 1940.

As well as the veterans and their family members, celebrities and TV and press reporters, there are some seats now on offer to members of the public on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. Ticket holders will meet up with the veterans and celebrities at Heathrow at 1pm on Saturday 28 August 2010 for pre-flight drinks and lunch prior to take off at 2.30pm.

The flight will last around two hours and will fly over the Isle of Wight, Hampshire, Sussex and Kent, before proceeding up the English Channel and across the North Sea to the coast of Holland, returning to Heathrow via Belgium and France. Tickets are £475 each, paid for by cheque, or via Visa, Mastercard, Maestro or Switch.

What a fantastic day it was to be in the presence of such lovely old gentlemen. It was a humbling experience to be in the same room as 13 of our Battle of Britain veterans.I was very fortunate to have spoken to, and had my photo taken with each veteran present. The respect i have for these guys i simply cannot put into words. The sight of flying alongside a Hurricane and a Spitfire something i cannot imagine ever doing again,a memory i will always have.It truly was a once in a lifetime opportunity i am so glad my son and i undertook.Thank you Mr Green,Mr Drake,Mr Walker.Mr Elkington,Mr Wainwright,Mr Wilkinson,Mr Morewood,Mr Burns,Mr Neil,Mr Nicholls,Mr Foster,Mr Gray,Mr Farnes. And of course Mr Bond for organising the event. And not forgetting our Captain,Mr Paul Shenton.

I was the very lucky winner of two tickets for this flight courtesy of the Find My Past competition. It was a day that I will never forget for the rest of my life. Until that day, I had never been up in an aeroplane before - and to make my maiden flight on such an occasion with these very honourable fellow passengers was thrilling, very moving and intensely humbling. It was wonderful to have the chance to meet these brave men and to hear their stories. The weather was perfect, and the views of the Hurricane and Spitfire flying over my Kentish countryside were superb. I wore my late mother’s Land Army medal - during the Battle of Britain she was living at West Malling, very much in the thick of the action. I also carried my father’s AFS button - he had wanted to join the RAF but was prevented from doing so by other work deemed to be of national importance. He therefore joined the AFS and was very much involved with saving Canterbury after the bombing raids. They both flew with me! Thank you very much to everyone who made that day possible for us all - especially the Find My past team and of course not forgetting Bill Bond and our Captain, Mr Paul Shenton.
